“It’s finished!”

27 Feb

There are three different types of “finished” for a piece of knitting.

IMG_3465

The first is when it is off of the needles.  The entire thing is knitted and your needles are free!  It’s like Dobby when given a sock.  You can start another project with them if you wish.

The next level is when all ends are woven in.  Anytime you add a new color, there are two ends that need to be integrated into the piece of knitting.  Different people do it different ways.  Lots of people hate to weave their ends in.  Most of the time, I don’t mind it.

Then there is blocking.  Not everything needs to be blocked.  Usually people don’t block acrylic, but I do.  Hats and wash cloths don’t need to be blocked.  Articles of clothing, shawls, sweaters, and some scarves do.  There are different ways to block, depending on fiber content.  Because this piece of knitting is an acrylic scarf, I’m going to take two towels, lay them end-to-end on the ground, grab a bunch of pins and pin the scarf to the ground.  Then i’ll take my iron, on high steam, and steam it.  Its a good way for me to figure out how long it is as well 😀

Then, if its not an order, i fold it up real nice, and put it in a gallon (or 2 gallon) zip lock bag, with the fiber content, item, price and length written on it.  If it’s an order, then I fold it up real nice and put it in the envelope used for shipping.  And send it off to its new owner!

Cowl Pattern – FREE!

21 Feb

So I’ve been busy knitting ALL THE THINGS – hats and cowls mainly – I have too many scarves, and no one is buying them, so why make more?

I made up my own cowl pattern, as well.  First I was using one my mom gave me, but then friends told me it was too short – apparently cowls are supposed to be long?  Twistable?  *shrug*  I don’t know.  I wear them a specific way so my face stays warm outside.  Most of my cowls are short, like this and this.

So then I made up my own pattern so that they can be long and/or doubled up.

So you use size 15 needles, circular, about 24″ long.  I use a super bulky and a worsted yarn together, or two worsteds, or a super bulky by itself.  Totally up to you.  No guage.

Cast on 85 stitches, place marker, join in the round, making sure to not twist!

Knit two rows

Purl two rows

Knit 4 rows

Purl 2 rows

Knit 4 rows

Purl 2 rows

Depending on how much yarn you have left, you can Knit 2 rows and then bind off, or Knit 4 rows, Purl 2 then bind off.  I’ve bound off on a purl row or a knit row before.

Weave in ends – especially if you had to join yarns in the middle because skeins of super bulky aren’t very many yards.

I usually use a Lion Brand Hometown USA along with something else – the black/purple is Hometown USA with purple hand spun, hand dyed Merino from Spun Ware over the Rainbow.

The grey/grey rainbow I’m currently knitting is a Hometown USA with Vanna’s choice Patchwork grey – both acrylic.

This one is all acrylic – two skeins of the same yarn.

What do you like to knit?

The State of my Etsy – 2015

13 Jan

So I got to work really early tuesday – I thought we would be busy and need help due to weather events, but I was wrong, so I figured i would log into my etsy from my work computer and analyze my 2015 stats.

shop stats 1

I did rather well for myself, i feel, in 2015.  I didn’t start listing items until may, but my shop has been around since 2011.

My first order was June 7, 2015, and the last order December 31, 2015.

I did do the promoted listings thing on etsy – a way to get my items out there and seen by people doing search.

shop stats 2

Impressions are people who saw the item while searching, vs clicks are people who clicked on them.

It did cost me more than I got in revenue, but I also got quite a bit of traffic.

LGBT stuff got the most searches, but I only sold one LGBT thing – on dec 31.

Search is my highest traffic search – which usually means my SEO is good.  I try to use all 13 tags on an item and make the description and headline as good as I can get them.  There are probably things I can change, if you have ideas, let me know!

shop stats 3

LGBT stuff is VERY popular, but doesn’t get me a lot of orders, not quite sure why.

shop stats 4

And, I am popular all over the globe!  I also sold to sweden and columbia, but those were via paypal, not etsy.

I have recently changed shipping on all jewelry items to calculated shipping – etsy has the weight and size of the item, and i now offer shipping to *any* country, as well as other shipping options than just first class.

So for the future

I’m going to make more lgbt stuff – earrings, necklaces, bracelets, keychains, hats.  Hopefully more will sell.  I’m also going to have LGBT stuff out at 2016 pride in town, with all of the above + perler items.

Here’s to a good 2016!

Happy Asexual Awareness Week!

25 Oct

Its the end of asexual awareness week (oct 19-25).

What is Asexuality?

An asexual (ace for short) is a person who doesn’t experience any sexual attraction.  Sexual attraction is defined as ‘the desire to do sexual acts to a person’.  What is defined as sexual changes from person to person.  Whether it be kissing, having sex, foreplay, making out, whatever.

Where can I go to learn more about asexuality?

The tumblr tag for asexuality is good, as is asexuality.org.

Asexuality is an umbrella term for a group of sexualities as well as a valid identity on its own.  Under the asexual umbrella, you will find demi-sexual, grey-asexual, lithsexual, cupiosexual, and various other terms.

Demisexual: A demisexual is someone who is only sexually attracted to people with whom they have established a close emotional bond.
Grey-asexual: Someone who identifies with the area between asexuality and sexuality, for example because they experience sexual attraction very rarely, only under specific circumstances, or of an intensity so low that it’s ignorable.
Lithsexual: Someone who experiences sexual attraction without the desire for it to be reciprocated.
Cupiosexual: in which one desires a sexual relationship, but feels no sexual attraction towards anyone.

Why is asexual representation important?

Without asexual representation, individuals won’t know it exists.  Take my story for example.

All throughout high school and college i felt different from others – they would talk about how “Derek is so hot” or “John is so sexy” and I never quite understood it.  Sure, they were cute, or good looking, but hot? sexy?  What are these terms, what does it all mean?  I had a few “crushes” on people, because it was expected of me to do so, but i never felt anything for the people.

After I started volunteering for have a gay day, I learned more about the lgbt world and found out that asexuality exists.  I went to christian schools growing up, so our sex ed was all abstinence only and only men and women have sex.  Which I now know is a lie – lots of people have sex with each other – it’s all good, as long as there is consent!

I realized I was asexual.  This opened up a lot of questions but also a lot of answers.  There are people like me out there.  Most people don’t understand.  They tell me “you just haven’t found the right person”  or “you can’t say you don’t like it until you’ve had it” (it = sex).  I never said I don’t like sex, dear persons.  I just said I am not sexually attracted to someone.  However, I also don’t like sex.  (Yes I have tried it).

So wait.  Why do some asexuals have sex?  How can you have sex without being sexually attracted to someone?

Easily!  You need to realize/be aware that sexual arousal, sex drive, and sexual attraction are three different things.
Sexual arousal suggests a physiological response; sex drive suggests a desire to respond to arousal or pursue sex; and sexual attraction suggests an experience of finding someone sexually appealing”
So while someone might be aroused, they might not find someone sexually appealing – arousal has nothing to do with sex.  Its why people get random boners – they’re not ready for sex, its just something their body does.
Asexual people are defined as asexual because other people aren’t sexually attractive in their minds (or the possibility of sex with other people isn’t particularly compelling). That does not mean that their genitals are incapable of arousal; it does not mean they’re necessarily unable to enjoy genital stimulation; it does not mean sex could not be physically pleasurable to them if they consented to have it.” “

So do asexuals date?

Yes.  They do.  There are many types of orientations and attractions.  There is romantic, sexual, aesthetic, and sensual orientations.  Asexuals can have any combination of orienations.  Biromantic asexual, homoromantic asexual, heteroromantic, panromantic, aromantic, etc.

How do you know if you are asexual?

Are you sexually attracted to other people (of any gender)?  Do you feel the desire to do sexual acts to persons whom are attractive to you?  If yes, allosexual (not asexual).  If no, asexual.  Check out this link as well.

Seven reasons I can miss the gala!

23 Oct

So I got an email from Calvin College with the “Seven Reasons you cannot miss the Gala” in it.

  1.  Color tour.
Um i see that every day on my walk to work?
  2. Food
I can cook my own much cheaper.  Sure it won’t be as fancy, but i don’t like fancy food.
  3. An excuse to look amazing
I already *AM* amazing…and i don’t need a gala to do so.  Nor do I own clothes fit for a gala.
  4. Funicular
I don’t even know what that is?
  5. Award winners.
What awards?  Who?  Why?  I have award winners in my family….
  6. Food, yet again
I know.  Most gala’s HAVE food.  but i cannot afford your gala!
  7. It’s in a treehouse!
How nifty!  But i like my feet on the ground, i’m not actually a bird.

So i clicked the “buy tickets” button, because i’m curious, and its $75/person.

Can’t afford it, sorry!  I didn’t even graduate from you, calvin, so i’m not sure why you consider me an alum.
